Friends of Highnam Church

The Church of the Holy Innocents in Highnam, consecrated in 1851, was built in beautiful parkland by Thomas Gambier-Parry in memory of his first wife and their children.  Thomas decorated the walls with his specially invented spirit fresco medium.

There is national interest in the church, described by Sir John Betjeman as the most complete Victorian Gothic church in this country.  The Friends of Highnam Church is a registered charity which enables visitors, whether local or from afar, to be kept in touch with ongoing restoration, learn more about its architecture, and support its upkeep.  Members pay a small annual subscription (£5 minimum).  All welcome.

Friends Report

The AGM of the Friends of Highnam Church in June was opened with Evensong by Pam and attended by 14 Members. Roger Hanbury was re-elected Chairman with Tom, Norman Gardner and myself as other Officers. We reported on completion of the Porch renovation and lantern funded by a grant from The Friends, and an enjoyable outing to St Leonard ’s Church and the Beauchamp Community in Newlands nr Malvern. Sadly we noted the loss of our Members Eileen King and Bishop John Yates. We also chatted over the ‘Songs of Praise’ experiences. Financially another good year with income of £715 and a surplus on the year of over £600; membership was slightly lower at 32. Subs were left at a minimum of £5 p.a. The excellent recruitment suggestion was made to provide Membership Application Forms to all of Tom’s frequent visiting parties, along with tea and biscuits on request. Anyone able to help with this occasional task welcome: please let me know. Future outings planned include a guided tour of the Cathedral tower (February) and a visit to Tenbury Wells (26th April). The meeting concluded with our usual superb tea, sandwiches and cake refreshments thanks to a number of our ladies.   Graham Rosam
